Cachao
Cuban bassist Cachao is considered the creator
of the mambo. He spent
most of his 76 years of his life in Cuba, where he was a prominent
jazz accompaniment musician, specializing in Afro-Cuban dance
music. Eventually he traveled to the U.S. and lived in Miami
for almost nine years with little or no recognition, partly
due to his extreme modesty.
He was introduced to the world for the first time by actor/producer
Andy García, who was born in Cuba but grew up in Miami,
through his 1993 documentary "Cachao… Como su
ritmo no hay dos". The movie was praised by the critics,
especially for its music. On January 16, 1993 Cachao had a
full house performance at the Radio City Music Hall in New
York, where he was acclaimed. In March 1995, Cachao won a
Grammy for his album "Master Sessions, Vol. 1".
