Chano Pozo
Chano Pozo was essential in the foundations
of what would later be referred to as Latin Jazz, a mix between
bebop and Cuban folklore. Pozo, a percussionist formed in
the midst of Cuban religious cults, moved to New York in 1947
where he met Dizzy Gillespie, who included him in his Bebop
band. Some of his collaborations with Gillespie include "Cubana
Be", "Cubana Bop", "Tin Tin Deo"
and "Manteca"; Chano Pozo co-wrote the last two.
Unfortunately, the musician was murdered in a confusing episode
in a bar in Harlem, one month after turning 34 years old.
