Charanga Habanera
Cuban Charanga Habanera began playing traditional
music, such as chachachá,
mambo, bolero
and guaracha, under
the direction of José Picayo in the late 80’s.
Violinist Gerardo Aguillón (ex Ritmo Oriental), David
Calzado and flautist Jorge Emilio Maza were joined together
by singer Juan Carlos González in 1989. Their first
independent record was titled "De La Habana a Montecarlo".
Talented local musicians wanted to be part of the promising
band, and were soon new Charanga Habanera members. In 1992
the tropical team recorded their debut album, titled "Me
sube la fiebre", with the participation of Juan Manuel
Arranz and Manolín
Doctor de la Salsa.
After singing on with Magic Music, "Hey You Loca!"
was released in 1994. "Pa’ que se entere La Habana"
was the 1996 release. Unfortunately and even though young
musicians joined to support the contemporary musical direction,
Tremendo Delirio in 1997 marked the end of the first era.
A year later, singer Mario Jiménez got together Charanga
Forever, while Danny
Lozada left to create Timba Cubana. David Calzado decided
to keep the group’s original name.
