Cheo Feliciano
Singer Jose "Cheo" Feliciano began
his music career at an early age, when he dropped out of high
school at age 17 to study the best salsa orchestras in New
York. Due to his profound interest in Latin music he wound
up as a "bandboy" for one of the best singers
on the scene, Tito Rodríguez.
On Tito Rodríguez’s recommendation he auditioned
as a singer for Joe Cuba’s
sextet and got the job. He recorded 17 records with this band
during the 50’s and 60’s.
By 1965 he had become one of the principal soloists in the
New York Latin salsa scene, which allowed him to work with
some of the most important musicians, including Eddie
Palmieri.
After a brief withdrawal, he made a comeback in 1972 as a
part of Fania All-Stars,
besides recording soloist albums for the record label for
over a decade. His career was reborn in 1990, when he signed
a new deal with RMM Records, where he continues to croon tragic
love stories with his sensual and passionate vocal style.
