Johnny Ray
Puerto Rican Johnny Ray (Johnny Zamot) began
playing Latin percussion when he lived in New York, signing
on with Decca Records after getting together his first group,
called the Johnny Zamot Band. They soon began climbing up
the charts with their first hit, a tropical song titled "Fat
Mama".
Johnny Ray’s second band was Society 76, with trumpeters
Ray Maldonado and Larry Spencer, trombonist José Rodríguez,
and pianist Paquito Pastore, and scored hits with "Bandolera"
and "You're my everything". Johnny Ray then founded
his own record label, releasing "Suavecito" and
"Dale pa´arriba", and produced "Romantico
con Salsa" in 2001, after signing with Univision Music
Group.
