Manny Oquendo
Manny Oquendo was born in New York City in
1931 and began studying the drums at age 14. He worked with
many different bands (belonging to Luis del Campo, Jose Budet,
Juanito Sanabria, Marcelino Guerra, and Pupi Campo) before
joining Tito Puente’s
band in 1950 as bongosero.
He was with this band for four years and after playing with
Tito Rodríguez and Vicentico Valdés, he worked
for six years as a session musician, recording for the best
bands in New York.
In 1962 he joined Eddie
Palmieri’s band and in 1974 he launched his solo
career, supported by his Conjunto Libre, with which he had
a hit in 1983, "Little Sunflower", considered one
of the year’s best records.
