Marc Anthony
A performer of multiple talents, (Marco Antonio
Muñiz) has balanced his career as an actor with his
singing career. Besides appearing in movies such as "El
sustituto", "Big Night", and "Hackers",
and in Broadway productions such as "The Capeman"
by Paul Simon, Anthony has reached the highest level within
Latin music. As the salsa singer with the greatest sales of
all time, Anthony was included in a list of the ten most influential
New Yorkers, compiled by the New York Magazine.
His father taught him music theory and composition. Anthony
grew up listening to Latino musicians, including Rubén
Blades, Héctor
Lavoe and Willie Colón,
and contemporary pop recordings by Air Supply and José
Feliciano. At age 12, Anthony and his sister were discovered
by David Harris, a demo and commercials producer. Anthony
was hired to sing the background music for various productions.
His ability for songwriting became evident and an early composition,
"Boy, I’ve been told", made it to the hip
hop top 40, thanks to his school friend Sa-Fire. Anthony later
sang choruses in Sa Fire’s album debut. He also sang
in albums for Latin Rascals and Menudo.
Together with producer and disc jockey "Little"
Louis Vega, Anthony recorded his album debut, "When the
night is over" in 1991. The Latino hip hop style album,
in which guest singers Tito
Puente and Eddie
Palmieri took part, included the single "Ride on
the Rhythm", which reached number one on the Billboard
charts.
On November 22, 1991, Anthony had the opening show at a show
in Madison Square Garden, where Puente’s record number
100 was being celebrated. Anthony’s second album, "Otra
Nota" (produced and arranged by Sergio
George), was a better representation of his salsa roots
and included the original song "Juego o Amor". "Todo
a su tiempo", released in 1995, was a continuation of
Anthony’s collaboration with George.
With his fourth album "Contra la corriente", Anthony
started working with the producer/arranger Ángel "Cucco"
Pentilde. In 1996, Anthony and Australian singer Tina Arena
recorded the theme song for the movie "La marca del Zorro".
