La Sonora Matancera
Considered by the Guinness Book of Records
as oldest pop group with longest time performing (72 years),
la Sonora Matancera is led by guitarist and singer Don Rogelio
Martinez. Among many changes in personnel that the group has
undergone throughout the over seven decades, are musicians
such as Daniel Holy, Nelson Pinedo, Albert Beltran, Bobby
Hood, Argentine Carlos, and his greatest student: Celia
Cruz. The original director Valentin Cane left the band
in the late 30’s due to his ill health.
Initially known as Septeto Soprano, the band changed its name
to Sonora Matancera in 1932, when the Revolution took place
in 1959 they left the island for New York, from where they
continued sharing their love for Cuban music with audiences
from all over the world.
