Vocal Sampling
This unusual band was formed in the early
90’s at the Instituto Superior de Artes de La Habana
by pianist René Baños, singer and guitarist
Reinaldo Santer, percussionist and bassist Abel Sanabria,
singer and guitarist Jorge Chaviano, trombonist Oscar Porro,
and percussionist Renato Mora. The band is unusual because
despite the fact that all are outstanding musicians with their
respective instruments, they tried to go for a vocal focus
on traditional Cuban music, with voices replacing all the
instruments.
This characteristic won them the respect of musicians such
as Peter Gabriel, David Byrne and Bobby McFerrin, among others.
After contributing with the song "Diablo al Infierno"
for a compilation by Luaka Bop, Byrne’s label, they
were produced by Faro Figueroa for their first album, "Una
forma más".
