Paila
Criolla
Percussion instrument made of a metallic box over
which a piece of leather is stretched. In the
19th Century, the paila criolla was used in Cuba
by street musicians before being taken up by the
danzón
music groups.
Paracumbe
Afro-Spanish dance popular in Cuba during the
17th and 18th Centuries.
Paseo
Slow section of the contradanza.
The dancers line up in two rows, one for the men
and the other for the women. The man standing
at one of the ends takes his partner by the waist
and proceeds down the isle formed by the two rows.
At the other end the dancers separate and take
their place in their row.
Pregón
Song (or fragment) used in other times by wandering
salesmen, crying out their wares.
Punto
This form of reciting song is common in Cuban
country areas and has many local variants. Its
tenth metric is found in many American musical
traditions. Thanks to the rich possibilities offered
by its rhythm, the punto is an ideal base, sometimes
used in popular music and concert music.
